Well Blizzard didn't announced or market it as F2P. They just openend Starcraft so people can access all modded content. In the end SC2 is for them still a full price game
Also i don't see any business model for a free2play RTS game

Well if u offer AOE3 in steam sales for cheap money, u will make urself a really bad name if u shut down the multiplayer service now. I think only EA does not have to care about that :D I am pretty sure that they work on AOE4 and that they will put much more effort into multiplayer than usually caus...

No they are actually stored in xml Files (="plain textfiles", u can open and read them with every texteditor), which are quite readable if u spend a bit of time on XML. People with deeper knowledge can even program a parser, so the data is put into a different format. U can even read them ...

I already thought before launch, that a shutdown after such a short time will happen if the game is not successful. It is even before the 5 year when consumer products for M$ run out of support.
