I've tried that before and after losing what must have been 50 or so villagers over the course of several games due to raids and not hearing the alarm go off I've decided to stop. But it seems you know that.

Cold definitely slows me down, however like most things I do, be it school work/tests/working having music going helps me a ton and I have my laptop wired to speakers so my aoe sound and my music comes out of the same place(I have an acquired ear for hearing aoe sounds through music).

another thing that really messes up my computer use in general is if i dont have my setup that i have at my house, my mouse is behind my monitor and its kinda awkward for anyone but me.
