The cable just pulls out. Try having only one linked up on the connection closest to the motherboard (the bit which is the green board).

If you have problems with it I'll get on skype or msn with you and go through it.

You could also try pulling out the connections, checking them for dust etc and pushing them back in, long shot by they may have worked loose and not connecting properly.

tough to get on skype or msn with him while he's working inside his only pc, there strokey.

but, he's right dan, the connectors just pull out, and the cable is flat, grey, with maybe a red stripe on one side. they're not difficult to unplug/replug or all that fragile for that matter.

do the led lights on the drives come on when you boot? if not, maybe it's the power supply to the drives.

the yellow exclamation mark you see, can you click on it? put your mouse over it to read text? if you can read the text, or click on it for a description of the problem and post the description, perhaps it could help us help you.

Lol, I meant I could explain things like checking it through the bios or checking other things while the computer is on. ;)

If both CD drives went out of order at the same time, it is more likely that the IDE controller or the cable got broken. Very unlikely that CD drives go at the same time out of order

Or, dan, you could also just call for technical support...

"Ridge Hall computer assistant; may I help you?"

"Yes, well, I'm having trouble with my drives."

"What sort of trouble?"

"Well, I was just typing along, and all of a sudden they went away."

"Went away?"

"They disappeared."

"Hmm. So what does your screen look like now?"

"Nothing."

"Nothing?"

"It's blank; it won't accept anything that I insert into the drive."

"Are you still in typing in Word Perfect, other program, or did you get out?"

"How do I tell?"

"Can you see the C: prompt on the screen?"

"What's a sea-prompt?"

"Never mind. Can you move the cursor around on the screen?"

"There isn't any cursor, I told you, it won't accept anything I enter into the drive."

"Does your monitor have a power indicator?"

"What's a monitor?"

"It's the thing with the screen on it that looks like a TV. Does it have a little light that tells you when it's on?"

"I don't know."

"Well, then look on the back of the monitor and find where the power cord goes into it. Can you see that?"

"Yes, I think so."

"Great. Follow the cord to the plug, and tell me if it's plugged into the wall."

".......Yes, it is."

"When you were behind the monitor, did you notice that there were two cables plugged into the back of it, not just one?"

"No."

"Well, there are. I need you to look back there again and find the other cable."

".......Okay, here it is."

"Follow it for me, and tell me if it's plugged securely into the back of your computer."

"I can't reach."

"Uh huh. Well, can you see if it is?"

"No."

"Even if you maybe put your knee on something and lean way over?"

"Oh, it's not because I don't have the right angle - it's because it's dark."

"Dark?"

"Yes - the office light is off, and the only light I have is coming in from the window."

"Well, turn on the office light then."

"I can't."

"No? Why not?"

"Because there's a power outage."

"A power... A power outage? Ah, Okay, we've got it licked now. Do you still have the boxes and manuals and packing stuff your computer came in?"

"Well, yes, I keep them in the closet."

"Good. Go get them, and unplug your system and pack it up just like it was when you got it. Then take it back to the store you bought it from."

"Really? Is it that bad?"

"Yes, I'm afraid it is."

"Well, all right then, I suppose. What do I tell them?"

"Tell them you're too stupid to own a computer."

Hehe np dude, glab u enjoyed it, one of my personal favourite jokes actually :) It's a true story and I edited the drives instaed of the original Word Perfect program. The help desk emplyee was fired for that :P

About the reformat, it could be easy if you don't see a problem with cleaning everything away from ur PC and if u have ur windows CD nearby?

Ok I'm not sure what I did, but things are workin again now! lol :D
basically there was a program, Roxio Easy Cd & DVD Creator 6, that kept messing up and it said that there was a file missing, and so i uninstalled the program and reinstalled it with this file, and it seemed to work, i have no idea how this was related to the CD/DVD dDrive since its a CD/DVD burning software but somehow it was, and it is now fixed :-S lol thanks for all your help anyway guys! You were all of very good use :D
Much better than paying money to PC World for them to say i need to drives whenin fact i actually dont lol

Gave them the box and they told me that is not a good enough reason for a refund! lol

That was very brave of you, Al. It must be hard to have your personal experiences broadcast over the internet.
