Cool, a gun debate. Who knew Indy would jump in???
1) gun laws will not remove guns from anyone but law abiding citizens;
2) consideration 1 holds until someone can repeal physics;
3) even if you get rid of the guns (which you can't see 1 & 2), criminals are made up of:
a) the most physically capable segment of society;
b) who are allowed to select their own victims;
4) the only way you can mitigate 3 is to allow the lesser physically capable to carry a lethal weapon if they want to;
5) the police are not there to protect, they are there to clean up messes;
6) virtually all gun crimes are committed by either previous felons or by premeditated actors planning a big spree; and
7) the bad actors in 6 are not affected significantly by gun laws.
One that cannot be proven and therefore can only persuade the already converted is that I have a problem with the government (which I think screws up just about everything) having a complete monopoly on deadly force against private citizens. Of course, all you can do is impose a time lag on an armed citizenry, you can't really enforce disarmament if the people have had enough due to 1 & 2 above.
