I may not be very high ranked nor very noledgable on different unit statistics, but i have seemed to notice that whenever i train rolerdos they do jack all and die quickly in rush and treaty! So i'm left asking what is their use and what are they good against?

rodelero r nice as a defensive/gaurding unit , best to use them as a deterrent
to anyone who may be making/thinking of going heavy on cav , they do their intended job well as long as you don't use them overly aggressively , best to keep them in mind as a ''back up'' unit to your r.i. unless your opponet goes all cav, then they really shine :D

They are basically pikes that trade higher speed for lower siege. I tried to use them, but its far easier to go xbow/pike due to them needing gold. Also, I struggle to accept that fact that xbows beat rods in melee - this is just plain nuts as they are supposed to be melee specialists. I think they need a much higher base attack and lower multipliers v cav.

I mean, they are about the only unit which struggles to beat strelets in melee ... aarrrggh!!

rods are one of my fav units, yet they kinda blow except vs cav.
They are better in the 1.1 patch :D
in team games they rock as cannon protection

I remember when Spain would spam them like there was no 2morrow in nilla. Man that was fun. They were so broken. Then Mr ESO nerfed them, again and again. Bad Mr ESO. I played spain for a couple of weeks recently again and was amazed at how much they svcked. They no longer scare horses away, especially Uhlans. They also wear heavier shoes which contributes to them running as smoothly as the European economy atm.

I never doubted their job vs Cav, I just think they should be able to melee better vs infantry - a bit like a mini doppel or samurai. Why should a musketeer be better than a rod in melee - one's got a pointy rifle and one has a sword and shield. Go figure ...

For me Rodelleroes are a nicer version of anti calv than pikes. They are faster and easier to make late game when you have a food/gold eco and not a food/wood eco.

I think you guys have already identified Rodeleros' strengths. They are an excellent guarding unit. They are good in 2v2 and 3v3 situations. I have used them in 1v1 vanilla and they do a great job protecting the 2 falc shipment for the Spanish FF. I have also found them effective in protecting abus or skirms because they can move faster to stop a cav charge, and with 40% hand resistance, they last a while in melee. I have seen people use them as raiders, but I don't think that's a great use for them. Just use them in their best role and they will help win games.

Ohh just thought of another use for them for atleast in treaty games. Sometimes I find the enemy is a bit musket/ranged calv heavy with 3 or 4 cannons that are blowing my army to pieces. With that situatuion my cav usually die before getting to the cannons or can get 1 hit off before they die, so I usually distract them with a large number of muskets/skirms and wait till the cannons start to reload. Charge in with the rodelleros from the and attack the cannons. Once they reach the cannons with atleast 5 guys per cannon it is all over(I generally charge in with about 40 of them). Just have 8 attack one send the others to the next and the first 8 will be able to take down the first pretty quickly and just keep hopping from 1 cannon to the next. Warning this does not work for the dutch when they have 7 or more cannons. Dutch with 10 cannons in treaty is the only one so far where I can not push them to thier base, almost all other civs require atleast 1 teammates help

rods + abus guns.
rods + ff ports + organ guns.

that combo in a 2v2 or a 3v3 is a good combo, and in a 3v3, ur teammate can go cav if he wants to, and he can just go and raid, and its pretty much a win. rods in age 2 can take on samurais in age 3, cuz samurais r 2 pop, and the japanese eco cant spam samurais early on.
