With the new released patch 2.1 Starcraft 2 is F2P now except Ladder and Campaigns and a few other things which are not important for actually playing the game. U can play on team ladder if u have someone in your party who has a Heart of the Swarm licence (or if u want to play WoL Teamladder WoL licence is sufficient)
Everything else is free. U can play custom games with all three races with the Starter Edtition and every game which is available on Arcade.

I don´t like Blizzards approach to F2P.
Too restricting

Well Blizzard didn't announced or market it as F2P. They just openend Starcraft so people can access all modded content. In the end SC2 is for them still a full price game
Also i don't see any business model for a free2play RTS game

Don't get buschmanns complaining. Everything is free except the campaign and 1v1 ladder, you can play team aldder with a friend who has the game. He just needs to invite you.

Also don't forget this game has nothing to unlock except portraits and decals, which you can't buy anyway. Gotta play for them.
