36drew thought of the night...
If you don't like balance problems, play mirror matches.
Nothing like a good mirror match IMO.

China vs. Brits is more fun!
Nah, not really. Mirror matches own! No ***** about balance and whoever wins is based on skill only.

Port mirror, FTW. But make sure you have at least 50 minutes to play :-P
Seriously, though, mirrors are a blast. A good German mirror can really turn up some interesting combos. And you're right, Harley, a mirror makes it impossible to blame someone for laming an OP civ.

I always wanted a mirror match tourney but it was never a popular idea.

the only problem i see with mirror matches is it's always in the advantage of the better player.

I disagree here. It happened to me alot of times that i beat a higher ranked player in a mirror match, while i lost to a lower ranked player. Russian mirrors ftw .

Theres a balance between skill and knowing the civ the best. For example you're never going to beat grunt in a Russian mirror even if its the first time hes played the civ but you might beat someone several PR higher than you in a mirror.

I've had the same experience. When I was just barely a 2nd lt I and the old Game Replays mentee thing was going on, my mentor was a Capt and I beat him in a Russian Mirror.
I think it's because you try more non-conventional things. Like a semi-ff and pop out mamelukes to slaughter all those strelets...

Althoguh I agree that they are obviously fair, I don't think they are very fun, too much of the same thing going on. Variety is the spice of AOE, and it also requires you to have a knowledge of two civs to make the best decisions. The more brain actvity or techincial the win, the more fun imo.
