i guess this is kinda old and maybe everyone knows of this already, but i still think it is very interesting
The whole WoL story was the exact continuation of BW. This is all about Duran's manipulations to make Raynor and the Dominion weaken the lasting strong force of the Sector, Kerrigan, and to finally kill her. He did so with Raynor, through his revolution funding needs and through his old friend Tychus, he did so with Arcturus, through his need of power by offering him new weapons (hybrids), and he did so with Valerian, through his daddy issues. All of WoL follows this pattern. All of Raynor's actions are the result of this manipulation. The one thing that is not is the ending scene, which was rather influence by Zeratul. By saving Kerrigan from being killed by Tychus, as it should have been, Raynor opened the first element of incertitud into Duran's plans.
So, most people hated the story and the ending mainly because of two things: first, because it would not do justice to BW story, as Kerrigan was easily manipulated while she was the master of it on BW, and secondly because the ending is kinda deux ex macchina. This undefeatable and dominant force is simple defeated by a Xel Naga artifact which just happens, by luck, to be found by the Terrans and which by luck happens to kill zerg and revert infestation.
If you read this way, the ending and the story do kinda suck. But they do so because it is the wrong way to read it, precisely because you are leaving the Duran factor our.
Let's go back to DW. In it, Kerrigan manipulated everyone (UED, Dominion, Protoss) to become the dominant force of the sector. But she did so mostly because of Duran. By the ending, we know that he was actually the one manipulating Kerrigan and that he was doing it so because he was working for a much great power.
WoL simple continues on this. If he is about to succeed, Duran needs to weaken the remaining dominant force on the sector, namely, Kerrigan. WoL is simply about that. The Moebius foundation, aka Dr. Narud, aka Duran, manipulated three big guys to do so: Arcturus (we know that he was creating hybrids as a weapon. Who did this on? Oh, right, Duran); Raynor (Tychus appears out of nothing to offer him funds for his revolution through a "Moebius foundation" headed by a Dr. Narud -aka Duran-), and Valerian.
The plan is simple. Duran controls Xel Naga technology. The same technology that was used on BW to wipe zergs and the same technology used to create zergs. How does he control this technology? Well, he works for a Xel Naga!
This explains why Raynor, through Moebius, is always capable of getting to the artifacts first and beat Kerrigan who has much more knowledge than him on this. This explains too how an artifact that humans should have no idea of its purpose or how to use it, can be manipulated to wipe zerg and revert infestation.
But using it on Kerrigan requires more than just having it. After all, the zerg under her are the dominant force of the sector. This is what he needs Raynor and the Dominion for. To be able to use the artifact at the right moment. Duran does n ow have an army. This is why he needs Raynor's and Dominion forces to go together to Char.
This explains most of the turns of the story. Most people did not find believable the fact that after being ready to win the revolution, Raynor decided to go to Char to just use a strange artifact. Well, he was manipulated into it. Most people did not find believable that the Dominion forces decided to go with him and attack Char, simply because Valerian took them like a son can go "ohh daddy, I took the car wthout your permission". Again, this is possible because Duran did it: he also manipulated Arcturus. We learn at the end that Arcturus knew about this and was working with Tychus.
The one thing which was not caused by Duran is the ending scene, that is, Raynor saving Kerrigan and killing Tychus. Raynor was not supposed to. As we know, in the foreseable future, Tychus did kill her. The ending scene is the one thing not caused by Duran, but rather by Zeratul and Raynor. It is what really starts a story which was otherwise closed, as we know because of Zeratul. This is why it was the perfect ending and transition to the main story.
i remember dr. narud from teh moebius foundation so he is duran!!!
really it all sounds way more intersting now, and not so cheesy

Re: [HUGE SPOILER] only read if you finished the campaign
from my understandings of the story for WoL , its not that Duran/Narud wanted the removal of the dominant force from the sector , but rather take control of it. as kerrigan is in power over the zerg , the dark voice is pretty much blocked out from aserting its influence over the swarm. the overmind saw what would happen had it not taken pre-emptive measures and so found a powerful psionic capable over being intergrated into the swarm *kerrigan* and remade kerrigan as a tool to stand up vs the dark voice. the overmind saw its own destruction and its zerg becoming slaves to the dark voice but with kerrigan at the center of power within the swarm the dark voice cant.
idk just my interpretation of the story - looking forward to HotS

yes dhd, and with kerrigan gone (what would have happened if zeratul didn't meet jim raynor again) then the dark voice (must be the head of the xel'naga^^) could easily wipe out everybody, including our dominion, protoss and zerg. that's why hey got hybrides of both zerg&toss.

Very interesting read. Makes bit sense the whole WoL storyline - I have wondered how can Raynor and Dominican work together on Char when they are sworn enemies. One thing doesn't make sense - why does the Dark Voice want to destroy everything that Xel Nagas created when he is one of Xel Nagas! Maybe HotS will reveal further info on that. Anyway very glad to see that my favourite lady is still alive.
